Two Sisters’ Primary School is situated in northern Kenya, Marsabit County, approximately 700 km north of Nairobi.
The school consists in 2026 of two preschool classes and grade 1-6 in primary school. Two Sisters’ School is shaping the future of young learners and serving as a beacon of hope for quality education in the region.

The school is currently headed by Mr Philip Lekupuny, assisted by Madam Silvia Lentoror, with a dedicated team of eight governmental teachers – five females and three males. There is a cook, serving the learners a meal per day and a watch man. The school has a board of management that oversees the day-to-day running of the school. Steven Labarakwe is senior advisor and the link between the school, the village, national and international relationships.

Markus Berg, student at Linnaeus University in Kalmar, Sweden made his teaching practice for five weeks at Two Sisters School. Markus is studying to become a preschool teacher and took part in various lessons at the school. Some words from Markus: The children, the teachers, and parents made my stay so very pleasant through their warm hospitality. I was truly spoiled by being able to take part in the Samburu culture, traditions, and way of life.
Urban Andersson from Two Sisters Church in Kalmar accompanied Markus to Two Sisters School. He volunteered at the school for two weeks helping out with the new library, dripping water for the plants, practical service and supported the teachers.

The resource centre will serve as a vital resource for both learners and teachers, supporting reading culture, research, and academic growth.
Alternative Rites of Passage and graduation ceremony for 22 girls resisting FGM. They were blessed by the village elders, AIC church and the visitors from Kalmar, Sweden. The ceremony marked a milestone in the empowerment and rights of girls.
Four representatives from Two Sisters’ School visited Kalmar, Sweden in a partnership with Kalmarsundsskolan and Two Sisters’ Church.
Two Sisters’ School successfully hosted the 2025 athletics competition, which saw participation from numerous schools and featured a variety of races. It's commendable that six of our learners advanced to the county competition, with one girl earning a spot at the regional level.
Over the last three years, Two Sisters’ School has actively engaged in community outreach initiatives, notably conducting Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) awareness and prevention training within the village. These efforts aim to educate and protect young girls from this harmful practice.
The school organizes an annual football tournament every December, for male and female teams in the region, fostering community spirit and providing recreational opportunities for the youth. These events are made possible through the support of Two Sisters’ Church.
In 2018 informal education was organized under a tree by the river with some 20 children from the local village, a village that had emerged due to road construction to Lake Turkana Wind Power and the drilling of two boreholes. These humble beginnings caught the attention of Steven Labarakwe and he mentioned it to the congregation in Two Sisters’ Church in Kalmar, during a visit in Sweden. The church congregation promised to give support and formal education started in January 2019 with 42 learners 3-5 years. The villagers decided to call the school Two Sisters’ School, as a tribute to the Two Sisters’ Church (the two sisters are Martha and Mary from the Bible). In March 2019 the first school building was constructed with funding from National Government Community Development Fund.
11 th March 2020 Two Sisters’ School was officially inaugurated by visiting members from Two Sisters’ Church, Sweden together with local officials and the whole community. A second classroom was at that time built by the church in Sweden.
17 th June 2021 Two Sisters’ School was officially registered as a public school in Kenya and Philip Lekupuny was appointed headteacher.
From 2019 to 2026 the school has developed from 42 learners in one class to 280 learners in eight classes, pre-primary 1-2, grade 1-6.
The school’s development has been further bolstered by international and national cooperation, which has contributed to infrastructure, resources and education. From the very beginning there has been a strong partnership with Two Sisters Church in Kalmar, Sweden. Two Sisters’ School has welcomed visitors from Two Sisters’ Church several times, every year from 2019 to 2026. This international partnership have significantly contributed to the school's growth and its positive impact on the community. In December 2023 the community members unanimously decided to name the local village Two Sisters’ Village.
In 2023 Two Sisters’ School started a collaborative relationship with Kalmarsundsskolan, a school next to Two Sisters’ Church in Kalmar, Sweden. This partnership includes exchange visits between teachers from both institutions, promoting cultural exchange and professional development.
Several Kenyan organizations and institutions have generously contributed to the constructions of classrooms, administration block, teachers quarters, toilets and water tanks.
In alignment with Kenya’s educational reforms, Two Sisters’ school is implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which emphasizes the development of learners’ competencies and creativity. The CBC framework focuses on nurturing skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving and innovation, preparing students to thrive in a dynamic world.
The partnership with Kalmarsundsskolan, Sweden has further inspired the teachers to use new pedagogical methods.
Through these initiatives, Two Sisters’ School is committed to provide a holistic education that equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute meaningfully to society.
Over the past years, Two Sisters’ School has evolved into a model institution in Marsabit County, dedicated to educate future leaders who will contribute positively to the community.
Two Sisters’ school has developed a comprehensive infrastructure to support its educational programs. The campus includes seven classrooms for primary education and preschool, providing ample learning spaces for students. Additionally, the facilities now include an administration office, a learning resource center, teachers’ living quarters, toilets and a small kitchen.
Looking ahead, the school aspires to expand with more classrooms for primary and junior secondary school and a science laboratory to facilitate practical learning experiences.
